A monthly online journal devoted to the study of the languages spoken in the Indian sub-continent. Our focus is on language use in mass media, education and administration, speech and hearing, sociolinguistic and political aspects relating to these languages and the society in the Indian subcontinent. We wish to present the linguistic descriptions, interdisciplinary research, and current issues of importance relating to Indian languages.




[ Particularities of English in India ]

There are many varieties of English used in India.The knowledge of English depends on the proficiency in terms of acquisition, on the regional as well as mother tongue and ethnic background. This regional and mother tongue varieties are defined with reference to the first language -Bengali English - or in terms of a larger language family-Dravidian English.

[ English in India ]

In terms of numbers of English speakers, the Indian subcontinent ranks third in the world, after the USA and UK. An estimated 4% of the Indian population use English; although the number might seem small, out of the total population that is about 35 million people (in 1994)(Crystal 1995:101). Although the number of speakers of English in India is somewhat limited (as compared to the total population), that small segment of the population controls domains that have professional prestige (Kachru 1986a: 8).
